Week One: Hey, I just noticed something
You love to write.
Some time ago, you heard about this crazy thing – National Novel Writing Month. Then, you decided to check it out. Somewhere in there, you got really excited. Somewhere in there, you made a decision. You made up a screen name and registered.
You want to write.
We don’t though, usually because “Things” get in the way. Writing, something that you love, often falls to the bottom of the priority list.
For this one month, that is going to change. Give yourself this gift, this one month. Allow yourself the joy and pleasure of doing something that you love. Allow yourself to put Writing to the top of your priority list and keep it there. “Sticky” it, if you will.
For those of you who have walked this road before, you kind of know what to expect. For the new people out there, this may be more writing than you are used to, but that’s okay. Run with it. Keep going. And at some point during the month, I promise this, it’s all going to click. You will have crazy epiphanies. Your characters will come alive for you. You won’t be consciously deciding what happens next, you will be watching it on the movie reel in your head, and your fingers just won’t move fast enough. Let yourself have these moments. This is what NaNoWriMo is all about.
As Ray Bradbury once said, “Plot is no more than footprints left in the snow after your characters have run by on their way to incredible destinations.”
Sometimes those footprints will be hard to see, and those are the times where you’re going to have to push through. But the more you push, the easier they’ll be to see. And when you’re done with this crazy NaNoWriMo thing, you’re going to not only have a novel, but you’re also going to be a better writer.

P.S. Pro Tip for Week 1: Don’t stop at 1,667 for the day. Get ahead early. Use all of that momentum and pressure that’s been building throughout October, and GO GO GO!!!
