Week One: Full Steam Ahead!
Dear Los Angeles Top Hatted Goggled Lemurs,
The clocks struck midnight on November 1st, the gears of our minds started rapidly turning, and we were off!
There is nothing like that first day of starting your novel. For months your characters and ideas have been brewing in your mind and once that clock struck midnight, you let your fingers fly and your words burst full speed ahead like a steam-powered locomotive or an airship reaching for the stars!
We are now officially into our first week of NaNoWriMo, and I hope the gears of your mind continue turning as you feverishly type towards your word count goals.
Think of your novel as your steam-powered automaton. You’ve spent the whole year drawing up blueprints and outlines for your story, and now you are laying the groundwork for building your automaton. You’ve gathered all the materials you needed, and now you are putting them all together. You’re introducing your characters to the world and breathing life into them. It won’t be long before they develop a mind their own and run away with your plot. But that is okay! This is NaNoWriMo, and you are building an automaton in the shape of a novel. Having your automatons get minds of their owns can be one of the best things that can happen to your novel since these automatons may introduce more twists and turns into your story. And these twists and turns can only mean one thing… MORE WORDS!
So as we steam-power ahead towards Week Two, I urge you to embrace all the unexpected cogs, gears, and screws that may appear in your ideas pile, because before you know it, you’ll have installed your last cog and all the extra pieces you thought you didn’t need or couldn’t find will all fall into place, and your automaton will whirl to life and take you beyond 50,000 words!
