2014 Midnight Blast Offs and Early Birds Write-Ins

rocketAre you ready? We are less than a week away from November 1st!

For anyone who wants to get a great start on NaNoWriMo and have some fun, we are having two Midnight Blast Offs on Halloween, and Early Morning Write-ins on November 1st for anyone who doesn’t want to stay out too late but love waking up early and being the early bird to gets their word count in.

Midnight Blast Offs!

Details/Info: Your MLs Sara (smcbride) and Jennie (AthenaKTT)  will be hosting this gala with swag bags for those who missed out on them at the kick-off. Dupar’s is open 24-hours so feel free to stay later!

  • Free parking in the big lot behind the restaurant, off Mentor.
  • Only two outlets, so come charged, but I’ll have power strips for a few people and we can trade around chargers.
  • No Wifi – total writerly focus time. (Or bring your hot spot enabled phone.)
  • Good drinks, soup, pie, food, hot cocoa!
  • Tell the waiter a separate check when you order.
  • Midnight WORD WAR!

[Studio City] Du-Par’s @ Studio City

Details/Info:  Come and hangout with your ML Xander (artofcheatery) at Du-Par’s to get a jump on your word count at Midnight! Du-Par’s is open 24 hours so feel free to stay longer.

Unless things have changed, we’re going to have no power or internets – come with charged batteries and if you can: your own internet – I’ll be able to provide some via my mobile hot spot, but I have to limit it to those of us who require it (Hi! I’m a netbook user! Wheee!)

Other than that, there be food and drink and supposedly: pie. Dupars is supposed to be known for their pie. Let’s put that to the test.

I’ll be there early to answer questions about NaNo, the website and probably have some extra goodie bags from Kick Off.


Early Bird Kick Off Write-Ins 

[Sherman Oaks] Early Bird Kick-Off @ Panera Bread

Details/Info:  Are you going to be out dancing and carousing with the goblins and ghouls on 10/31? If you are, you can still kick off your NaNoWriMo right with an Early Bird Write-In with your ML Chris Bailey!

This 6AM start time will flow into the regular Saturday morning write-in that is at Panera all year. This means you can write from 6AM – Noon on the first day of NaNoWriMo Now that is dedication to your writing and a GREAT start to the month!

This is the Panera that is between Kester and Van Nuys Blvd on Ventura Blvd (not the Studio City or Encino ones also on Ventura Blvd).  There is a massive parking lot out back.  Free wi-fi and I bring 4 – 6 plug power strips to add ample power.

Don’t forget to patronize the establishment.  They’ve been taking care of us all year and they’re very friendly and welcoming.  They let me reserve space if the crowd is big and don’t charge for the privilege.  Let’s show them we appreciate it!

[Culver City/Mar Vista] Late Bird Kick-Off @ Coffee Connection

Details/Info:  For those who turned into a pumpkin at midnight post-Halloween bash, and/or are unable to make it to one of our fab midnight NaNo blast-offs, this November 1st Late Bird Launch is for you.

This is an extension of our year-round weekly Coffee Connection write-in, but for November only we’ll be in “the Cabin”, the bungalow on Venice Blvd. end of the cafe. We’ll post signs to direct you to the space, which will be set up with seats for about 30, and have wifi access. Coffee and food is coveniently located right next door (please patronize the coffee shop as they give us access to the space pro bono!).

Come pick-up NaNoWriMo goodies, and hangout with other writers just as weird as you are. And yes… there will be word wars and prizes!

2013 TGIO Party!

We’re on day 20 way past the mid-way point and on the final stretch towards the 50,000 goal. Before you know it, it will be December. And how do we celebrate the end of NaNoWriMo?!

With a Thank Gosh It’s Over (TGIO) Party! The Thank Gosh It’s Over (TGIO) Party is a time honored NaNoWriMo tradition. The TGIO party is the perfect place for us to share our NaNoWriMo experiences, celebrate our successes, and connect with our compatriot WriMos through out month long suffering of writing our beloved novels.

Details: Coffee Connection is a great Cafe in West Los Angeles in Culver City. They have a great variety of creative coffees and pastries. They even have sandwiches if you’re hungry.  We’ll be meeting in the Courtyard/Gallery area of the cafe. Parking is mostly street parking on Centinela.

With NaNoWriMo being over, there is no excuse to not come out and party! There will be raffles and lots of fun to be had!

If you want to share a page of your novel, you’re welcome to bring a one page excerpt!

2013 Catch-Up Write-A-Thon!

Anyone starting to panic yet? Looking at your schedule for the beginning of November and wondering what you were thinking? Trying to finish early to relax over Thanksgiving?

If this is you, come catch up (or get ahead) at this six-hour write-a-thon! Yes, Nita’s normal write-ins are also six hours long, but this time we’ve got our own room! There is a parking area with with lots of free parking. There will be wi-fi and outlets — all provided with with no purchases required!  There’s even a park nearby if anyone wants to take a walk to get those creative juices flowing.

Park anywhere in the lot (the church is located in an office building, but there’s a sign on the building) and look for an open door with a NaNo logo taped on it. We will be upstairs in rooms 202/203.


  • Word wars with prizes! (TBD, but may include some stuff from Nita’s trip to San Francisco and the Night of Writing Dangerously.
  • Food! There will be candy, snacks, coffee/tea supplies, and materials to make PB&J sandwiches for lunch. Feel free to bring your own writer fuel, as well.
  • Inspiration! There will be a special Inspiration Station set up for this write-a-thon only, plus mini inspiration for you to take home with you, while supplies last.
  • Stickers! SHINY stickers for anyone who reaches 50,000 before or during the write-a-thon!
  • Farmers Market! (optional) The park next door happens to be the home of one of the biggest farmers markets in L.A. It’s walkable from the church, so feel free to come early and walk over, or take a break and eat lunch there. Open 8am – 1pm.

Come for all or part of the write-a-thon–just bring your chargers and get ready to type!
